Dental inlays and onlays are restorations that can be used to restore function, appearance and strength to moderately damaged teeth. They are often an ideal solution when damage is too great to be repaired by a traditional filling, but a full dental crown is not necessary.
Inlays and onlays are minimally invasive since they do not remove any of the healthy tooth structure. They are more conservative than dental crowns which do require the removal of significant tooth structure. Also known as “indirect fillings,” inlays and onlays are made outside of the mouth in a dental laboratory. The term “inlay” is used when the damage is only in the center of the chewing surface, and they are referred to as an “onlay” when the restoration is used to repair damage on one or more points of the tooth. An onlay can even be used to cover the entire chewing surface if necessary!
When you receive an inlay or onlay, it will be custom-made to fit your tooth perfectly. Once complete, you will hardly notice that it’s there! The first step of the process will be removing all of the damage or decay.
Once the area is completely clean, and all of the damage is removed, an impression will be taken so that your restoration can be created. Once complete, it will be bonded directly to the tooth.
These restorations are a more conservative approach than crowns, while still providing a strong, durable and natural-looking option for your smile.
