At the office of Plantation Dental, it is our priority to help our patients maintain their oral health. We offer a number of preventive services to help you and your family protect their smiles and avoid decay. One of these treatments is dental sealants.
Dental sealants are thin, clear coatings that are painted on the chewing surface of the molars. These back teeth are used for chewing, and their uneven surface is vulnerable to a buildup of plaque. Most cavities occur in these teeth.
Sealants offer protection to your teeth against cavities and bacteria by creating an invisible barrier. They also create a smoother, easier-to-clean surface. In addition to brushing twice a day, flossing daily and visiting our office at least two times a year, sealants will significantly minimize the risk of tooth decay in the back teeth.
Before applying a sealant, the tooth will be cleaned thoroughly to remove any plaque or other deposits. We will then apply an etching gel to the tooth to roughen it slightly. This helps the sealant bond properly. Next, we apply the liquid sealant to the tooth with a brush. This is dried with the use of a special curing light. Finally, we will check to ensure the tooth is properly sealed and protected. Sealants are most commonly used for children, but they are also effective for adults who at high risk of decay.
