While it is always our goal to save your natural teeth, in some cases, we may determine that a tooth extraction is the best option. When providing an extraction, we will work to make the procedure as easy and painless as possible.
The first step of a tooth extraction is to take X-rays. This will allow us to determine the most effective method for removing the tooth. During the actual extraction which typically only takes a minute or so, we will provide anesthesia to ensure your comfort. Most patients only feel pressure during the procedure.
The top priority after an extraction is to control any bleeding. You will be asked to bite down on gauze for 30 to 45 minutes to help form a blood clot. It is important to be very careful not to disturb the blood clot. You should refrain from drugs or alcohol, exercise, smoking or using a straw for at least a day. To manage swelling, an ice pack can be used. After 24 hours, you can gently rinse the area with warm salt water.
We also provide wisdom teeth removals. These final molars erupt in the back of the mouth when a person is in their late teens or early twenties.
Most people need them removed due to the lack of available space. A wisdom teeth removal procedure is more intricate than a standard extraction.
After an extraction, we will provide additional recommendations and guidelines to help ensure a quick and easy recovery.
